I.T. in Marketing - Assigmnent 1 - Question 1
Evaluate and compare the features, functions, pricing, available editions, technology etc. of any two sources of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
In this question, I would like to evaluate SAP and OpenBravo.
* Features:
SAP is one of the biggest ERP software provider, many companies would provide a better offer to their staff who's familiar with SAP. SAP software solutions for small businesses and midsize companies offer you the robust business management and business intelligence (BI) and performance management functionality you can use to power your business from end-to-end, streamline your operations, and improve visibility into your business information for better decision making. To help companies manage there entire business more efficiently and with complete transparency,SAP offers two categoriesof solutions.
Business Management SoftwareIntegrated business management solutionsfrom SAP can automate and streamline your core business processes,such as order to cash, with supportfrom end to end. By unifying your business on a single platform, you can drive higher operational efficiencies acrossyour entire enterprise while gaining the control and transparency you need to move forward. Business Intelligence SoftwareThe SAP® BusinessObjects™ businessintelligence (BI) solutions optimize yourcompany’s business performance and effectiveness by allowing you to instantly see and analyze the situations with complete hard facts – from entry-level reporting and ad hoc query and analysis to executive planning and dashboarding.By tapping into any data source anywhere inside your company, SAPBusinessObjects BI solutions transform data into crystal-clear, actionable insights,so you can instantly understand what’s happening in your businessand why –and most important, how to respondand plan ahead.
Openbravo ERP has been designed with broad business functionality to help businesses improve overall performance. It is based on a single, integrated database model covering all key application areas of a complete business management system, including seamless integration to Business Intelligence (BI) and Point of Sale (POS).
Openbravo ERP's comprehensive business functionality is implemented on top of the robust Openbravo ERP Platform, which provides an equally strong set of cross-application functionality. The core functionality provided by the platform ensures a consistent and productive end user experience, while also meeting key IT needs in the areas of security and integration.
Openbravo ERP has many neat characteristics that make it stand out from the crowd and that make it the perfect businesses software, eg. Alerts, Linked items, Dimensional Reporting, Compatibility and Sharing, Email, Keyboard navigation, Modular, Easily configurable, Roles, Scalabiliy, Multi and auditing. etc
Openbravo provides professional commercial open source ERP solutions, packaged for companies of different sizes. The products can suit for different size company's needs, ie QuickStart Edition , SMB Edition, Enterprise Edition.
Openbrave's business model eliminates software license fees, providing support, services, and product enhancements via an annual subscription. Comapared with SAP, the price relative lower.
Based on your understanding of ERP, do you believe that a firm should implement enterprise resource planning software when it is a new company, or after it has had time to mature ? Explain your answer.
For my point of view, implementing a ERP software is depended on the complexity of the business instead of it is new or mature company. If the primary business is simple, even it is a mature company, ERP software is useless, If the businees involves with a complicated relationship with vendor, buyer and client, the ERP software pay an important role to solve the problem.
As my mentioned, a company with a complex business should use a ERP software when it is new established, the founder should invest a huge money of it. As we all know, every staff have differnt attitube and sytle to work, if the company does not has a consistent system to to do the same thing, manager will be hard to make the decision and hard to solve a problem even it is small at the original.
However, a coin has two sides, a company which have simple businees needs to implement ERP software. It may contradict to my concept, but it is another situation. If a company has many departments, the linkage between them is very tight. ERP software at this situation can help different departments to work smoothly. The manager then can plan the best resources allocation. Surly the founder should take the risk of lising the capital as the investment is large.
In conclusion, a new company should implement the ERP software or not is depened on the complexity of the business and the structure of the company. The most important is the ERP really suit the business or not.
